Local Tauranga installer vs national franchise: what's the real difference?

With a local, owner-operated installer, the person who measures your windows is usually the same person who fits them and stands behind the warranty - with a national franchise, those roles are often split across different people, which can mean less accountability if something goes wrong.

I get asked this a lot, and I understand why - there are some big, well-known names in this industry, and it's natural to wonder whether going local is actually the better call, or just the smaller one.

So here's my honest take, having worked both sides of this over the years.

Continuity of service. When I measure your windows, I'm the one thinking about how they'll be fitted. When they're installed, it's me or my small, trusted team - not a subcontractor I've never met. With a lot of the bigger operators, the salesperson, the measurer, and the installer can be three completely different people who've never spoken to each other about your job.

Accountability. If something's not quite right after install - a sticking louvre, a gap that needs adjusting - you're calling me directly, not working through a call centre or a franchise head office. I built this business on being the person who picks up the phone.

Consistency of craftsmanship. Every shutter I fit reflects on my name, not a brand I license. That matters to how carefully a job gets done - there's no incentive to cut corners when it's your own reputation on the line, not just a KPI.

Where franchises can have an edge. To be fair, bigger operators sometimes have more stock on hand, wider showroom displays, or slightly faster turnaround on standard sizes. If speed is your only priority, that's worth knowing.

But for most people, what matters more is knowing exactly who they're dealing with, that the advice is honest, and that if anything needs sorting after the fact, there's a real person - not a ticket number - on the other end.

That's the whole reason Sorrento Shutters exists the way it does. Local, owner-operated, servicing the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, with the same person from measure to install to warranty - whether you're in Mount Maunganui or out towards Cambridge.

Happy to have a chat if you're comparing your options - no pressure, just an honest conversation.
