Sorrento shutters built for four seasons in a day

I’m writing this while the weather does its usual Bay of Plenty routine: bit of sun, bit of wind, then a shower out of nowhere!
That’s exactly why shutters work so well in our part of the world.
Most people first look at shutters for a stylish look or for privacy, and they definitely deliver that. But what I see day to day is something more practical. Sorrento shutters give you real control over heat, glare, and airflow without having to shut the home off from the outside.
Tauranga summers can be intense. North and west-facing rooms heat up fast, especially bedrooms and living spaces with big glass. Instead of pulling curtains and losing the light, shutters let you dial it in. Tilt the blades to soften the sun, keep the view, and stop the room turning into a hot box.
Then the weather flips, as it always does here. A breeze picks up or a shower rolls through and you still want fresh air without everything getting soaked. Shutters handle that easily. Open, closed, half open, anywhere in between. No cords, no flapping fabric, just simple adjustment.

A job we finished recently on Ocean Beach Road in Mount Maunganui is a good example. North-facing bedroom with a huge window that caught full morning sun. The room was bright but uncomfortable, and curtains weren’t cutting it. We fitted hinged plantation shutters so the owners can filter the direct light without losing the view – simple, practical and stylish.
I’ve been focused on Tauranga for the last year and am newer to the Waikato, but the needs are much the same. Old villas with tricky windows, new builds with big sliders, coastal places dealing with salt and sun all year. The common thread is people wanting something that fits how they actually live.
That’s why I love shutters. They’re honest. Solid, simple, and they don’t date. Kids, dogs, sandy feet, humidity, heatwaves, surprise southerlies, they just get on with it. A quick wipe now and then and they look the same as the day they went in.
If you’re tired of closing curtains in the middle of the day just to keep the house bearable, or you want privacy without turning your place into a cave, shutters are worth considering. I’m always happy to pop around, measure up, and talk through what would suit you and your home.
